About Us
Shin Ri Tan Kyu - the
literal (English)
translation is
"seeking the truth". We are a group of
dedicated, focused instructors with a love of studying and sharing the martial
way.
Our goal is simple: Live in such a way as to lead by example, balancing the
concepts acquired from the study of martial arts with the challenges encountered
in everyday life.
We endeavor to foster good qualities within our students: acceptance of others,
patience and forgiveness. In compliment, we create accomplished fighters
and technicians, prepared to protect family, friends or selves, if necessary.
"If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at
least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things."
Descartes
What we teach
The primary karate style we teach is USA Goju, which is a hard/soft style of Karate. It is principally a
medium to close range combat system, using techniques designed to incapacitate an opponent
as quickly as possible. The softer, circular 'ju' movements are utilized to
bring opponents within striking range of the harder, more direct 'go'
applications. The system utilizes low kicks, elbow strikes, joint locks, and
takedowns from multiple angles, against both armed and unarmed assailants, its
practitioners relaxed, yet prepared for any sudden threatening situations.
One
premise of the Goju system is that there is no singular solution to a given
situation or problem. Thus, the ability to flow with that situation, to adapt to
the environment, is what ensures survivability. One will find that this concept
applies not only to the battlefield, but also to everyday occurrences in our
lives, from the classroom, to the workplace, to the boardroom. The literal
translation of Goju is hard/soft, and defines, somewhat, the reason for this
system's effectiveness.
We complement our art by cross training in other systems to better understand their philosophies and approach to
self defense. With the capricious demands and varied circumstances
confronting us in our everyday routines - Art imitates Life.
