Mr. Tom Richer

My first exposure to martial arts training was in Tang Soo Do during my   elementary school years where I was instructed by Charles Barrett on Long Island.  My dojang time ultimately gave way though to my passion for competitive soccer which I played until college.  In my freshman year at Iona College in 1988, I came back to the martial arts.  The Iona College Karate Club was a 20+ year old USA Goju training hall when I joined and was a place for serious old school training sessions.  The Iona College Karate Club was my dojo from 1988 to 1994 and is where I received my Shodan from in 1993.  In the mid 90's, life "got in the way" and I took a long hiatus from dojo training due to work relocations, marriage and starting a family, ivy league graduate school, and starting a software company.  In 2006, when I was looking to start martial arts training again, I chose to train at the Shin Ri Tan Kyu Academy.  I always admired Renshi Suggs and his dojo as it had a reputation where both practical self defense and advanced training was regularly practiced.  In 2007, I became an Assistant Instructor at Shin Ri Tan Kyu where I assist in the instruction of our school's kyus.

Received Shodan in USA GoJu in May 1993 from Kyoshi Ben Kwaitkowski
